Latest BurrellesLuce Media Rankings Highlight Competition At Top of Social Network, Newspaper and Website Categories

FLORHAM PARK, NJ (July 9, 2013)—YouTube has gained at Facebook’s expense in social-network share of visits, according to the June 2013 edition of “Top Media Outlets: Newspapers, Blogs, Consumer Magazines, Broadcast, Websites & Social Networks,” compiled from leading data sources and just released by BurrellesLuce.

The snapshot of the week ending June 15 showed Facebook maintaining a commanding lead in the social-network category, at 56.9. But that figure was down five points from the week ending Jan. 12, 2013, when Facebook recorded a share of 62.5. YouTube’s share for the week ending June 15 was 25.1, up from 20.6 in January.

Other notable changes gleaned from the June edition include the following:

* The New York Times pulled ahead of USA Today to take second place in circulation among the print editions of U.S. daily newspapers, behind The Wall Street Journal. (The Times’ and Journal’s positions are reversed, however, in the standings of dailies’ online editions.)

* Bing has steadily advanced among U.S.-based websites. The June 2013 list shows Bing at Number 6 in the U.S. and Number 16 globally. In January 2013, Bing had a U.S. rank of 11 and a global rank of 23, which was up from 15 and 30, respectively, in May 2012.

When BurrellesLuce started producing “Top Media Outlets” in 2004, it covered daily newspapers only. Over time, the scope has been significantly enlarged, and today the lists also encompass blogs, consumer magazines, social networks, websites, daily newspapers online, and television and radio markets.

More specifically, the June 2013 edition of “Top Media Outlets” includes rankings for these media categories (data sources are in parentheses):
